The East Side Learning Center (ESLC) is our response to the serious educational needs of children on the East Side of St. Paul, Minnesota. The ESLC provides free one-on-one tutoring in reading for children in grades K-4 who read below grade level and live or go to school in St. Paul. These children receive personalized lesson plans and are tutored three to four times a week for 50-minute sessions with volunteer and professional tutors.
The program goals are (1) to help children reach their appropriate reading level by the end of fourth grade, (2) to empower them to be successful in school and society, and (3) to provide opportunities for parents to participate in the reading progress of their children at home.
The ESLC started in 2001 with 19 children, 25 volunteers, and the director. In 2009-2010 the ESLC served over 220 children through the support of 240 well-trained volunteers, some part-time professional tutors, and a core staff. Tutoring takes place at John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary, North End Elementary/Franklin Music Magnet, and St. Matthew’s School. For the past ten years the ESLC has served the children and families of St. Paul and seen tremendous growth and success.
It would be impossible for the East Side Learning Center to continue without the financial support of foundations, corporations, organizations, and individuals. If you would like to support our program, gifts can be sent to: East Side Learning Center, 740 York Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55106 or contact Audrey Lindenfelser, SSND, Executive Director at 651-793-7331.
Volunteer Opportunities:
An estimated 6,000 students in St. Paul could benefit from reading tutoring. Help close the achievement gap in St. Paul schools! Tutor a child one-on-one for a minimum of one hour a week with resources, training, and support provided by the East Side Learning Center.
Tutoring takes place before and after school, Monday-Thursday, from October through mid-May.
