The East Side Learning Center (ESLC) is our response to the serious educational needs of children on the East Side of St. Paul, Minnesota. The ESLC is a year-round, non-sectarian, one-on-one tutoring program in reading for children in grades K-4 who are below level in reading and live or go to school on the East Side of St. Paul.

From 19 to 190: ESLC becomes one of the largest, most-successful after school programs in the Twin Cities

Years of Growth

The ESLC started in 2001 with 19 children, 25 volunteers and the director serving at one site. Today we’re serving over 150 children through the support of 100 well-trained volunteers, some part-time professional tutors, and a core staff serving at three sites, John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary, Bruce F. Vento Elementary, and Trinity Catholic School. In the first five years, the ESLC has seen tremendous growth and success backed up by both assessments and anecdotal evidence.

All children are tutored three times a week after school for nearly one-hour each session and every day during a five-week summer session.

The goals of this child-centric program are (1) to help children who are below grade-level in reading reach their grade level no later than the end of fourth grade, (2) to empower them to be successful in school and society, and (3) to help parents feel more comfortable in participating in their child’s reading progress through parent-child interaction at home. Volunteer tutors are an essential part of the success of the East Side Learning Center. Staff prepares all the individualized lesson plans for volunteer tutors to use with their students.

It would be impossible for the East Side Learning Center to continue without the financial support of foundations, corporations, organizations, and individuals. If you would like to join in supporting our program, gifts can be sent to: East Side Learning Center, 740 York Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55106 or contact Audrey Lindenfelser, SSND, Executive Director at (651) 793-7331.
