Pope Francis has declared this year as a Jubilee Year of Mercy to celebrate and live out the mercy of God. He initially made the announcement in his proclamation, “The Face of Mercy.”

During this special period of time in the Church, Pope Francis calls all Catholics to be profound witnesses to mercy and to "find the joy rediscovering and rendering fruitful God's mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time."

To participate in the Year of Mercy, the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops recommends looking at works of mercy in two different lights: corporal and spiritual. Corporal works of mercy include feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, visiting the ill and giving alms to the poor. Spiritual works involve counseling the doubtful, educating others, forgiving wrongdoings and praying for the living and the dead.

During the Year of Mercy, we will share one story per month on our website along with more frequent posts on our social media accounts highlighting acts of mercy. We hope this small deed will showcase kindness, compassion and forgiveness in a world that needs so much of it.

School Sisters of Notre Dame have already begun celebrating the Year of Mercy. At Our Lady of Good Counsel in Mankato, Minn., luminaries spelled out “Mercy” in order to highlight this Jubilee Year and to embody mercy by raising money for the ECHO Food Shelf of Mankato. In all, 1,480 meals were provided through the luminary efforts.
