Experience Together

Leading the Way to Improvement

Lemay and Notre Dame TowerIn recognition of Women’s History Month and National Catholic Sisters Week in March, the Incarnate Word Foundation sponsored an essay contest in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Students were asked to highlight the strengths and admirable qualities of women religious and indicate how the individual or community has changed their lives.

One of the winning essays was written by Natalie Pistone, a senior at Notre Dame High School-St. Louis, about Sister Gail Guelker, SSND, president of Notre Dame High School.

In the essay, Natalie outlined how Sister Gail helped the Lemay Leaders Club have an “opportunity of a lifetime.”

Lemay Leaders Club is a collaboration between students at Notre Dame on East Ripa and Hancock Place High School on West Ripa. The students at these two schools designed an educational plaza to replace an abandoned lot at the intersection of Ripa and South Broadway.

Under Sister Gail’s leadership, Natalie wrote, the members of the Lemay Leaders Club worked with architects and designers to create a streetscape that “we’re proud to call our own.”

“Sister Gail never doubted the girls or their determination to achieve what they set their mind to accomplish.” She also included that the project would not have happened without Sister Gail. “Certainly Sister Gail’s leadership has inspired a whole community to work together for neighborhood improvement.”

The Lemay Educational Plaza is scheduled to be dedicated on April 28. The students are now looking for other nearby areas to improve.
